Begin your tour of this mountain home in the entryway, featuring photos of the first families who have used the Western Residence as their mountain retreat, beginning with the family of Governor Terry Sanford, in office when the residence was donated to the state in 1964.
Western Residence Living Room
The home’s comfortable family room invites visitors to curl up in front of the fireplace and play one of the many board games kept on hand. The wood paneled walls give the room a cozy cabin feel. Tables crafted by a Clay County artist hold pottery by Western North Carolina potters. Baskets woven by Cherokee artisans enhance the space. A large glass-front cabinet showcases the work of several North Carolina artists.
Western Residence Back Porch
Just off the family room, a large veranda of slate tiles offers stunning mountain views – the perfect spot for an outdoor event.
Western Residence Kitchen
The updated and remodeled kitchen is designed to be used as a catering kitchen for the many special events held at the house. The dining room next door is ready to be used for meetings or smaller gatherings.
An outdoor pavilion on the property is available to rent for special events. You can even try your hand at a friendly game of horseshoes, a mountain tradition.
