Feb 24, 2026

Bennett Place State Historic Site will host a day of programming designed for homeschool students on Friday, March 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. This special program offers homeschool groups a taste of North Carolina history with hands-on activities and demonstrations. Bennett Place staff and volunteers will host stations related to Civil War history. Staff from other North Carolina historic sites and organizations will also be present to discuss additional topics and eras in North Carolina’s long and rich history. Bennett Place is administered by the Division of State Historic Sites, part of the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources.

Students ages 5-18 are welcome, while most programs are best suited for students in grades 3-8. Tickets are $2 per student with no charge for adults. Advanced registration is recommended via the site’s Google Form. Tickets must be purchased in person on the day of the event. All groups must include at least one adult who will remain with their student(s). Groups with 7 or more children should have multiple adults. Homeschoolers do not need to be part of a group to register for the event.

About Bennett Place State Historic Site
Once the home of James and Nancy Bennett, this 189-acre farm in the North Carolina Piedmont became the location of the largest surrender of Confederate soldiers in the American Civil War. Over the course of three days in April 1865, General William T. Sherman and General Joseph E. Johnston deliberated the terms of surrender and peace. Today, the Bennetts' reconstructed farmhouse, kitchen, and smokehouse recall the lifestyle of an ordinary Southern farmer during the Civil War. Bennett Place State Historic Site is located at 4409 Bennett Memorial Rd., Durham, NC 27705. For more information, call 919-383-4345 or visit https://historicsites.nc.gov/all-sites/bennett-place.
