The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources offers holiday events to match every interest and taste. Holiday train rides at the N.C. Transportation Museum, a “Christmas Flotilla” at the N.C. Maritime Museum in Beaufort, “Christmas by Candlelight” at a state historic site and “Holiday Pops” or other performances with the North Carolina Symphony at home or on tour, are a few of the unique holiday experiences awaiting families at modest or no cost.

State parks also offer wonderful ways to experience nature during the holidays, and the “First Day Hike” to start the New Year off right.

Nov. 26, 4 p.m.; Nov. 28, 7:30 p.m.; Nov. 29, 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. — North Carolina Symphony Pops: Cirque Holiday Pops at Meymandi Concert Hall at Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh, 4 p.m.: Kick off the festive season with spellbinding grace and daredevil feats, contortionists, and acrobats performing on stage and 40 feet above it! Nov. 29 — Christmas Open House at Horne Creek Living Historical Farm, 11 a.m.-4 p.m.: Visit the Hauser Farmhouse, all decked out for Christmas in period decorations. Shop for unique and beautiful presents in our gift shop and enjoy some festive cheer with hot chocolate and cookies. Dec. 2 — Holiday Pops with the North Carolina Symphony at Riverfront Convention Center in New Bern, 4 and 7:30 p.m.: Celebrate the Symphony’s most cherished holiday tradition as we bring beloved seasonal classics to life, from timeless carols to spirited renditions of festive favorites. Dec. 4 — History of Santa Claus, Patron Saint of Sailors at Fort Macon State Park, 11 a.m.-noon: Did Santa prefer a green suit before he started wearing his now iconic red? What is Mrs. Claus’s first name? We may not have all the answers regarding the mysterious and jolly figure, but during this family friendly presentation, Associate Education Curator Christine Brin will try to answer some questions without taking away any of the magic. Dec. 5 — Yuletide by Lantern at Historic Halifax, 4-8 p.m.: Experience an authentic Christmas of long ago in the warm glow of lantern light. Enjoy homes, public buildings, and taverns decorated for the season with festive, all-natural décor. Interactive historical vignettes will bring each building to life. Enjoy a warm fire in the Tap Room tavern just as guests did two hundred years ago! Dec. 5, 12 — Duke Homestead Christmas by Candlelight, 5:30-9 p.m.: Kick off your holiday season. Enjoy live Christmas music, dancing, singing, holiday cookies, and a whole lot of history as you follow a candlelit tour through our historic area. Costumed interpreters will bring the Duke family home to life as it might have been for Christmas in 1870 when the Dukes lived here! Tours depart from the Visitor Center every 10 minutes. Purchase $8 tickets for a specific tour time. Please plan to arrive 10-15 minutes early, as tours will leave on time. Dec. 6 — Holiday Open House: A Colonial Christmas by America 250 NC at the Museum of the Albemarle, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.: Step back in time and experience a colonial Christmas through seasonal hands-on activities and games. Discover the colonial and revolutionary history of northeastern North Carolina as you watch the Albemarle Express model train stop at each of the thirteen counties represented at the museum. Receive a keepsake bell to highlight your visit to the Albemarle Express. Dec. 6 — Candlelight Christmas at Somerset Place, 4-5:30 p.m.: Come ahead of the crowd and get a sneak peek and enjoy an evening with traditional holiday decorations illuminated by candlelight inside the historic Collins House. The tour is self-guided with Historic Interpreter inside, so you can explore at your own pace and in any order. Listen to Christmas music while sipping hot chocolate. Dec. 6 — Jonkonnu at Stagville, 4:30 p.m.: Celebrate an African diaspora holiday tradition with St. Sya Academy and Historic Stagville. Jonkonnu traditions connect African diaspora communities across the Atlantic and Caribbean. It is still celebrated in communities in Jamaica, the Bahamas, Belize, and more. In North Carolina, people of African descent resisted cultural erasure by preserving dance, drum, and costume traditions like Jonkonnu. Dec. 6 — Christmas in Carolina: Candlelight Tours at Alamance Battleground State Historic Site, 6-9 p.m.: Enjoy “Christmas in Carolina” at Alamance Battleground. This candlelight tour will highlight the traditions and culture of 18th-century North Carolina’s communities during the holiday season. A variety of vignette and impressive activities will highlight the lives of the people of North Carolina. Dec. 6 — Friends of the Maritime Museum Holiday Flotilla, 5:30 and 6:15 p.m.: Join the Friends of the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort for their annual Holiday Flotilla! Dec. 6 — Mountain Gateway Museum Christmas Open House, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.: Decorated for Christmas, the museum will also host a holiday scavenger hunt and a special exhibit on holiday traditions in western North Carolina. Visitors can enjoy free hot cocoa and participate in holiday crafts from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. before the annual Old Fort Christmas parade.

Dec. 6 — Island Jingle at Roanoke Island Festival Park, 5:30 p.m.: Roanoke Island is excited to announce our annual holiday show, Island Jingle! This free event is happening Saturday, Dec. 6, after the annual Town of Manteo Christmas Parade. The lobby will be open at 5:30, doors open at 6 p.m., and music will start at 6:30 p.m. The Tilet Sisters host this year’s event and features multiple local and regional musicians including That Guy Shane, Doug Dino, The Lion Band, Jeremy Russell, plus the Mustang All Stars and Mustang Kids bands! Dec. 7 — Santa on the Beach at Lake Norman State Park, 10 a.m.-2 p.m.: Enjoy some fun at Lake Norman State Park as Santa makes his way back to the North Pole. Bring your camera for a perfect family photo on the beach with Santa. Games and fun will be had by all as we continue into the holiday season. Dec. 7 — Somerset Place's 35th Christmas Open House, 1-4 p.m.: Explore, enjoy, and experience the Christmas season at Somerset Place for the 35th Annual Christmas Open House. Be inspired by traditional holiday decorations of fresh natural and floral arrangements adorning the exterior and interior of site buildings. Explore the plantation on a self-guided tour with staff members and volunteers available to answer questions. A costumed doctor from the mid-19th century will also be on hand to discuss antebellum medicine in the plantation hospital. Sip hot spiced tea, and sample black-eyed peas, hearth-cooked cornbread, and delicious desserts. Dec. 10 — Story Time Stewards at North Carolina Museum of History, 10:30 a.m.: Celebrate the holiday season with the North Carolina Museum of History. Dec. 11 — State Tree Lighting at the N.C. State Capitol; 5:30 p.m.: Join the State Capitol and Gov. Josh Stein for the annual tree-lighting tradition! The festivities begin on Capitol Square with luminaries and holiday music performed by the Raleigh Concert Band; ceremony begins at 6:15 p.m. Santa is scheduled to make an appearance. After the ceremony, come into the Capitol to experience its holiday decorations. The 2024 State Tree is sponsored by State Employees Credit Union. Dec. 11, 12 — Christmas by Lamplight at Horne Creek Farm: Caroling in the parlor of the historic Hauser farmhouse, a make-and-take craft project, and selected readings from the period will be featured.  In addition, you’ll learn about the Hauser family and their immediate neighbors, the Sawyers. At the program’s conclusion, a hearty meal will be served. Reservations are necessary to attend. Two nights are available: Thursday, Dec. 11 or Friday, Dec. 12. Two time slots will be available each evening:  5:30-7:15 p.m. or 7:30 p.m.-9:15 p.m. Price per person is $30, plus sales tax. Dec. 11, 5-9 p.m.; Dec. 12, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Dec. 13, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. — Executive Mansion Public Holiday Open House: The Executive Mansion will be beautifully decorated for the holiday season, each room will feature a uniquely decorated tree. No reservations are needed or accepted, guests are received in the order of arrival. Traditional guided tours are not offered during this time; however, a trained docent will be stationed in each room and can answer any questions.  Visitors are welcome to bring nonperishable food donations for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina.

Dec. 12 — A Light in the Darkest of Night at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site, 4-7 p.m.: Visit Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson for self-guided exploration and meditation from 4-7 p.m. The site’s visitor center and gift shop will remain open during the evening for holiday shopping. https://historicsites.nc.gov/news/events/light-darkest-night-1

Smith Watercraft Center in Beaufort: The annual train show, hosted by Beaufort Lions Club and the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, offers a glimpse into the past with antique working model trains and model trains of all sizes. Dec. 13 — Winter With the Western Company at Fort Dobbs State Historic Site, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.: This living history event will give visitors a glimpse of daily life for the garrison of Fort Dobbs as the soldiers prepare for the onset of winter in 1756. Dec. 13 — Christmas in Sedalia at Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum, 5-7:30 p.m.: Join us at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum for a night of music, shopping, and holiday festivities at our free event, Christmas in Sedalia. Bands and choirs from local schools will perform on an outdoor stage, a vendor fair with local artisans inside of Kimball Hall for all of your holiday shopping, and a very special visitor from the North Pole available to take photos! Dec. 13 — Holiday Hike to the Light at Jockey's Ridge State Park, 5:30-6:30 p.m.: Join Ranger Paul Austin for a fun and festive evening hike to the light. Experience the dunes at night with an educational tour up to our solar powered Christmas tree. Catch a magical view from Jockey's Ridge and the spirit of the holiday season. Dec. 13 — Santa by the Sea at the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.: Experience holiday magic under the sea during a festive Aquarium event. Enjoy decorating tasty cookies, making holiday cards, and creating your own unique ornament. There will be festive games and activities throughout the Aquarium and participants get a take-home photo with Santa himself. Mrs. Claus will be telling stories and children can make their own reindeer food to take home. The event holiday bag will be a small addition cost to the Aquarium admission fee and membership reservation for that day. Tickets will be available online. Purchase the holiday event bag for each child participating in the event. Dec. 13, 14 — Western Residence Open House, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.: Celebrate the holiday season at the Governor’s Western Residence Holiday Open House in Asheville. Reservations are not needed to attend the open house. Guests are invited to tour the residence, which has been decorated for the season. Shuttles will be available for guests to board in the parking lot located at 143 Executive Park, at the base of Town Mountain Road, and will run continuously during the event. Visitors are welcome to bring canned food donations for the MANNA Food Bank.

Dec. 13, 20 — Candlelight at Tryon Palace, Farewell to our Royal Governors, 4:30 – 9:30 p.m.: Candlelight is Tryon Palace’s famed holiday event showcasing the beautifully decorated Governor’s Mansion illuminated by the magical glow of candlelight. As you travel from one decorated room to another within the Palace, fabulously costumed interpreters present an engaging story that relates to back to the Palace’s colonial history. Dec. 14 — An 18th Century Christmas at Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site, 1-5:30 p.m.: Join us once again this holiday season, as we explore how the American colonists celebrated Christmas. During the program, you can enjoy 18th century inspired refreshments in the Visitor Center, participate in traditional games, or try your hand at Moravian paper stars and other 18th-century crafts. The highlight of the evening will be an authentic period candlelit service in the ruins of St. Philips Anglican Church. Dec. 15-19 — Jingle in the Jungle at North Carolina Zoo: To celebrate the season of giving, the North Carolina Zoo is delighted to announce a December promotion to give back to the community — Jingle in the Jungle! We welcome visitors of all ages to come and enjoy the beautiful Christmas lights, delicious cookies, crafts, and activities. Dec. 20 — Holiday Cheer at Historic Bath, 4-7 p.m.: Join us at Bonner Point under the marquee tent with wassail and hot cider, ginger muffins and festive music. 20-minute tours of the Bonner House focusing on this well-to-do household of the 19th century where you will see what was then the new, Victorian traditions of Christmas we now know so well. Then visit the Carrow Cottage set to portray a family of fishermen, for so long a mainstay of our economy, and their humble, but still festive Christmas traditions. Dec. 20 — Christmas Storytime by the Fire at Vance Birthplace, 9 a.m.-noon: Celebrate the holiday season with festive storybooks read around the historic hearth fire! This free program is full of Christmas cheer and will include three readings of winter and holiday-themed picture books for young learners, as well as seasonal fun for the whole family. Drop in anytime, but our readings will take place in the Vance house kitchen at 9, 10, and 11 am. Dec. 27 — Twelfth Night at Roanoke Island Festival Park, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.: Celebrate Twelfth Night at Roanoke Island Festival Park! Dec. 31 — New Year's Eve Cannon Blast at Fort Macon State Park, 6-7 p.m.: Celebrate the end of 2025 and the beginning of 2026 with a blast! Fort Macon will fire off its big guns in celebration of the new year. There will be live entertainment starting at 6 p.m., and the cannons will go off at 7 p.m. Bring folding chairs and a picnic meal, similar to the summer concerts.
