Research and Publications

The Division of Research and Publications serves as the hub for historical research, scholarship, and public history within the Office of Archives and History. We connect the work of historians and researchers with the public, helping make North Carolina’s history available through a wide range of publications, digital resources, educational materials, and public history programs.

The Division encompasses four primary programs: Print Publications, Mosaic NC, the Highway Historical Marker Program, and Commemorations. Together, these programs support historical research and scholarship, expand access to primary and secondary historical resources, recognize significant people, places, and events across the state, and create opportunities for North Carolinians and visitors to engage with the state’s rich and diverse past.

History Behind the Research & Publications Logo

Our logo is an image of the key to the Halifax Courthouse. It opened the door to the building where the Fourth Provincial Congress approved the Halifax Resolves on April 12, 1776. That document instructed the colony’s delegates to the Continental Congress in Philadelphia to vote for independence - making North Carolina the first colony to officially call for freedom from Great Britain.
