On Saturday, March 8, Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site will host the North Carolina Rice Festival. The festival celebrates how rice and Gullah-Geechee culture shaped the North Carolina Lowcountry.

The North Carolina Museum of History is thrilled to announce the tenth annual Longleaf Film Festival!

Take a ride on a wagon around the historic Harper House at Bentonville Battlefield’s annual fall festival on Nov. 5. The program will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and will feature demonstrations by costumed interpreters and a festival atmosphere with carnival games, an inflatable, vintage baseball, and more!

For the first time in three years, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences’ largest annual event is back in person. BugFest, the largest one-day bug-centric event in the country, introduces museum guests to a range of arthropods from North Carolina and around the world. Satisfy all your web weaving, wing flapping, dungball rolling, creepy crawling and bug munching pursuits in one day: Saturday, Sept. 17, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. It’s in person and free!

Like almost everything else, BugFest will be a little different this year … welcome to BugFest 2021: Plan Bee, a celebration of bees!Did you know there are more than 20,000 species of bees worldwide and more than 4,000 in North America alone? Seventy percent of the world’s agriculture depends on bees, and without them many plants would not be able to reproduce. Because they are crucial to Earth’s ecosystems, it’s important to protect bees and to understand our part in their survival. 

Make plans now to virtually “shellabrate” the environmental, economic, cultural and culinary importance of oysters during North Carolina Oyster Week, Oct. 12-16. The week is co-hosted by North Carolina Sea Grant, the N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, and the North Carolina Coastal Federation. 

In light of Governor Roy Cooper’s state of emergency declaration and guidance regarding canceling or postponing large gatherings in an effort to limit the spread of COVID-19, Mountain Gateway Museum’s 2020 Pioneer Day festival has been canceled. 

Festival organizers had hoped to reschedule the event, usually held in late April, for July 4, but rescheduling has become impracticable. 

Dancing in the street, a 5K run, a classic car show and a new health and wellness fair are all activities being held in conjunction with Mountain Gateway Museum’s 35th Annual Pioneer Day festival Saturday, April 27, in Old Fort.

Join Town Creek Indian Mound and the Montgomery County Public Library in Troy in celebration with the North Carolina Science Festival’s Statewide Star Party April 13! “The Moon and Beyond” is the theme for 2019 in commemoration of the Apollo moon landing and the “giant leap” that left the first human footprints on the moon.

Explore the crafts and harvest traditions of one of North Carolina’s largest plantations at the Historic Stagville Harvest Festival, Oct. 20, noon to 5 p.m.  Enjoy demonstrations by master craftsmen, hands-on activities for all ages, and music by artists from the Music Maker Relief Foundation. Admission is $5 per person, in support of the site’s programs and mission. Tickets are available at the door.
