Writers delving into societal inequality and social unrest have taken top honors in the competitions for the 2018 North Carolina Book Award, to be presented Oct. 26 during the annual meeting of the N.C. Literary and Historical Association in Greenville. The struggle of women and African Americans seeking opportunity and equality resonate throughout the winning works.
The state’s highest civilian honor, the North Carolina Award, will be presented to six distinguished North Carolinians Friday, Nov. 16, at the Raleigh Convention Center. North Carolina students put their knowledge and presentation skills on display at the 44th National History Day Competition at the University of Maryland, College Park June 10-14. When it was over, seven top 10 prizes or recognitions had been awarded to competitors from the Tar Heel State from among the 3,000 competitors.
