Hundreds of middle and high school students will compete Saturday, April 27, at the National History Day Competition in the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. The 450 students from 70 schools are the winners of district competitions held across North Carolina. The public is invited to view their projects on the theme “Triumph and Tragedy in History.”

In 1799, young Conrad Reed discovered a 17-pound gold nugget while fishing in Little Meadow Creek, giving rise to America’s first gold rush. They met to make peace. Two old enemies met in the humble parlor at the farm house of James and Nancy Bennett. The result of that meeting was the largest surrender of troops during the Civil War on April 26, 1865.
