Secrets remaining from North Carolina's most active role in the French and Indian War will be sought during an archaeological excavation at Fort Dobbs State Historic Site. For the first time in years, Deputy State Archaeologist John Mintz and Shawn Patch of New South Associates will lead research at the site. The public is invited to observe the team at work July 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The 440th Army Band will give a free performance on the Tryon Palace South Lawn overlooking the Trent River in downtown New Bern Sunday, July 3. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.

Tryon Palace will offer behind-the-scenes tours at the costume shop and conservation lab Tuesdays throughout the month of July. All tours will begin at 2 p.m. at the Waystation, located on the corner of Pollock and George streets in downtown New Bern.

The State Archives of North Carolina demystifies the process with the "Searching for African-American Ancestors" workshop, Saturday, July 23, at the N.C. Museum of History in downtown Raleigh.

A traveling exhibit, "So Great the Devastation: The 1916 Flood," recalls the catastrophe and will remain at Chimney Rock State Park through July 25.

Beginning August 6, 2016, the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA) presents History and Mystery: Discoveries in the NCMA British Collection, which showcases the best of the NCMA’s permanent collection of Old Master British paintings and sculpture from 1580 to 1850.

The North Carolina Symphony joins with the Durham Performing Arts Center to present the best of Broadway in a one-night-only revue.  The orchestra will play music from new and beloved works including Grease and Gypsy. 

The 440th Army Band will perform at Roanoke Island Festival Park, beginning at 8 p.m. (gates open at 6 p.m.), for the July 4th Celebration.  Fireworks, provided by the Town of Manteo, will begin at dark.

The Hans Christian Andersen story takes on a whole new dimension as this clas­sic is transformed into a fable. The crafty tailors are foxes; the prime minister a near-sighted camel; and the councilor, a befuddled old walrus. Even the audience takes part, as animals, of course. Don’t miss this great production June 29, 30 and July 1 at 10:30 a.m. in the Indoor Theatre at Roanoke Island Festival Park. Tickets: $5 except for ages 2 and younger-free.
