Newsome Award

The Federation sponsors the annual Albert Ray Newsome Awards.

Albert Ray Newsome served as secretary of the North Carolina Historical Commission and as professor of history at UNC-Chapel Hill. He was a strong advocate for the study and preservation of local history.

The award named in his honor recognizes outstanding achievements in preserving local history by member organizations. This award is both for members to recognize their own organizations through self-nomination and for members to recognize projects in their communities. The recipients receive a $500 prize and help promoting their achievement.

The nomination form includes questions about:

  • contact information about the nominated organization
  • staff, volunteer, funding, and visitation information
  • description of the nominated organization's project.
