Historic Oakwood Cemetary: History, Love and Life
State Library of North Carolina, August 12
Join the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources’ State Library of North Carolina, State Archives of North Carolina, and Historic Oakwood Cemetery for a book talk and signing given by Historic Oakwood Cemetery authors Robin Simonton and Bruce Miller The authors will discuss the history, love and life of Historic Oakwood Cemetery. Oakwood Cemetery evolved from a final resting place for Confederate Soldiers to a modern “Cemetery full of life,” reflecting over 150 years of the remarkable history of Raleigh, North Carolina. Many of the men and women who lived that history and developed this Southern capital—from soldiers to politicians to educators and clergy, from merchants and craftsmen to social activist and laborers--now rest in Oakwood, memorialized in monuments that grace this lovely garden cemetery. Immediately following the program, there will be a book signing.
Make A Gourd Birdhouse
Bennet Place State Historic Site, August 12
Calling all you bird fans out there. Come to Bennett Place and take a class on turning a gourd into a house for your winged friends. Diane Frankenfield from the North Carolina Gourd Society will be here to teach you how to make this creative twist on the old-fashioned bird house. At the end of the class, you will take home a finished bird house that you can hang up in your yard. This project not only helps your winged friends but also helps preserve this historic site.
Trucks for Duke Homestead
Duke Homestead State Historic Site, August 13
You and your friends can sample a delicious, varied menu underneath the big, hardwood trees that shade our historic property. You can bring your own chairs and blankets or make new friends by sharing one of tables in the site’s picnic area. Trained interpreters and staff will be on hand to offer tours of the historic house. Ticket sharing is encouraged—bring a friend!
Studio Class: Writing with Eudora Welty as Muse
North Carolina Museum of Art, August 13
Join writer-educator Mara Shurgot for a workshop inspired by the exhibition Looking South: Photographs by Eudora Welty. Students explore themes of character and dialogue suggested by Welty’s images. Bring a notebook, journal, or laptop.
