 Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site soon will commemorate the 159th anniversary of the Battle of Bentonville with a day of historic demonstrations, activities, and informative presentations.

The event, “Always on Duty,” Saturday, March 16, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., will highlight the experiences of medical providers during the Civil War, including surgeons, stewards, and nurses. Visitors can learn more about the battle and what life was like for soldiers and civilians during the Civil War. The event is free.

The CSS Neuse Museum is pleased to announce an upcoming free admission day scheduled for Saturday, March 2, 2024. The event is expected to start at 10 a.m. and will continue until 3 p.m. The museum offers visitors a chance to explore a range of exhibits and engage with interpreters who will provide valuable information on different aspects of the Civil War. The topics that will be covered include the life of sailors, the contributions of African Americans and women, the Battle of Bentonville, and more.

The sounds of one of the final Civil War battles will echo again on the anniversary of the clash that occurred in North Carolina.

Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site will recreate the noise eyewitnesses described as “one continuous peel of heavy thunder,” with cannon and rifle fire demonstrations Saturday, Aug. 19 with the program “Heavy Thunder."

Costumed interpreters will show how artillery and infantry units functioned during battles like the one that occurred at Bentonville. Demonstrations will take place at 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.

Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site is excited to announce the return of its nature-themed event, “Bentonville in Bloom.” The event will showcase the natural resources and wildlife that call Bentonville home. As battlefield preservation has grown to over 2,000 acres, the wildlife communities found within those acres have also been conserved. “Bentonville in Bloom,” will provide visitors with a chance to learn more about the ecosystem from experts on the flora and fauna of eastern North Carolina.

Visitors can learn more about not only the battle, but also what life was like for soldiers and civilians during the Civil War. The event is free to attend and runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site will commemorate the 158th anniversary of the fall of Fort Anderson Saturday, Feb. 18. Free activities from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., will include infantry demonstrations, medical and embalming interpretations, and more.

Several presenters during the day will explain and demonstrate what life was like for soldiers and civilians during the American Civil War.

From 6-7:30 p.m., visitors can witness a reenactment of the final hours of Fort Anderson during the “Plunging Shot and Screaming Shells” program.

Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site will host its annual Christmas Open House, “A Civil War Christmas,” on Saturday, Dec. 3 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Visitors will have the chance to see the Harper House as never before. The house will be furnished as the residence of the Harper family in December 1865 instead of its normal set up as a field hospital. During the day reenactors will show how Civil War soldiers would have marked the holiday season. Everyone will be welcome to decorate and take home their own holiday ornament.

The CSS Neuse Museum has partnered with non-profit organization KultureCity to provide a sensory inclusive experience for all museum programs and events. This new initiative will make exploring the museum a little easier for visitors with sensory sensitivities, including people on the autism spectrum, as well as people with sensory processing disorders, PTSD and other needs.

Take a ride on a wagon around the historic Harper House at Bentonville Battlefield’s annual fall festival on Nov. 5. The program will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and will feature demonstrations by costumed interpreters and a festival atmosphere with carnival games, an inflatable, vintage baseball, and more!
