The sleepy village of Bath sprang to life whenever the notorious Blackbeard sailed into port. Historic Bath will recreate a pirate encampment July 16, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., to highlight the routines of pirates in a free program. The focus will be on the victorious visit of Royal Navy Lt. Robert Maynard to Bath fresh off the defeat and death of Blackbeard.

In commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Venezuelan revolutionary Francisco de Miranda's death, Tryon Palace, in collaboration with Artist Studio Project and the Venezuelan Cultural Association of North Carolina, will host a daylong celebration of Miranda and Venezuelan culture Saturday, July 16, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Fort Dobbs State Historic Site will feature living history interpreters recreating an 18th century militia muster July 23-24.

The N.C. Office of Archives and History will join local government leaders to host a free, commemorative symposium July 15-16 at Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College.

 Fun and games will abound as Town Creek Indian Mound celebrates the birthday of Dr. Joffre Coe, Saturday, July 9, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Coe, "the godfather of North Carolina archaeology," taught the art and science of research in the dirt and did groundbreaking work at Town Creek more than 80 years ago.

Secrets remaining from North Carolina's most active role in the French and Indian War will be sought during an archaeological excavation at Fort Dobbs State Historic Site. For the first time in years, Deputy State Archaeologist John Mintz and Shawn Patch of New South Associates will lead research at the site. The public is invited to observe the team at work July 13, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Join WRAL chief meteorologist Greg Fishel for a new Town Hall discussion on “Environment, Economy, Entrepreneurship: Is Clean Energy Good Business?” This innovative look at the potential benefits and consequences of clean, renewable energy takes place at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Thursday, July 14, 7–8:30 p.m.

The 440th Army Band will give a free performance on the Tryon Palace South Lawn overlooking the Trent River in downtown New Bern Sunday, July 3. Gates open at 5 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m.

Tryon Palace will offer behind-the-scenes tours at the costume shop and conservation lab Tuesdays throughout the month of July. All tours will begin at 2 p.m. at the Waystation, located on the corner of Pollock and George streets in downtown New Bern.
