In one location in Lansing you can fly-fish for trout, take a hike, go mountain biking – even play horseshoes! And less than a half mile away you can visit the Lost Province. That’s a big day in a town that covers less than a half square mile!
Morning
Creeper Trail Park – Talk about priorities, more than a quarter of Lansing is taken up by Creeper Trail Park. This linear park follows Big Horse Creek, which offers trout fishing, either from its banks or from an Americans with Disabilities Act accessible fishing pier. It also makes for scenic hiking on the 0.4-mile natural surface Creekside Walking Trail. Up for something longer? There’s also a mile-long paved loop that meanders through the park. If you’re the competitive type, there are horseshoe pits, if you’re the athletic type there’s a 2.6-mile mountain bike network that offers 1,700 feet of vertical climbing. (Hey, if not for the compassionate use of switchbacks, it could feel much worse.)

Noonish
Too tired from your morning of Creepering to head far for lunch? No problem, you just need to make it across the street to the town’s several restaurants. If it’s a sunny day – it usually is – you’ll enjoy the al fresco options.
Afternoon
Two options:
- Lost Province Center for Cultural Arts. Located in the former Lansing High School, an imposing stone structure less than a half mile from downtown, this non-profit is dedicated to “experiencing Appalachian culture and artisan trades.” That could mean checking out the work of local artists, or it could mean taking a class in, say, stained glass or throwing pots.
- Barn Quilt Trail. Perhaps a leisurely drive in the country is more your thing after a morning cavorting in the park. The Ashe County Arts Council Quilt Trail includes 13 stops featuring an array of barn-painted quilts, from the Bear’s Paw on Little Windfall Road to Faith & Family on Joe Thomas Road. The tour takes about two and a half hours. Find directions here.
