The North Carolina Land and Water Fund Board of Trustees met October 1 and 2 to consider grant applications and make awards for projects that will protect North Carolina’s land and water from the mountains to the coast.“As we continue the unprecedented response to communities impacted by Hurricane Helene, we are reminded that conservation makes us more resilient to future events,” said Governor Roy Cooper. “These important grants will help protect our state’s land and wetlands for generations to come.”

We will have a brief orientation session for trustees on September 18 at 1 PM. This meeting will just be for the purpose of sharing the 2024 Grant Cycle materials with trustees in preparation for the upcoming funding meeting in October. There will not be individual project review or funding decisions made at this meeting.

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) announced today that it is partnering with the Town of Canton on the downtown Canton Recreation Park. The $100,000 investment from DNCR will help fund an inclusive playground at the 10.5-acre park with accessible, all-abilities features, including wheelchair access, braille signage, American Sign Language and sensory features.
Hikers soon will be able to enjoy a new stretch of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail in Johnston County.Visitors are invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Bentonville Battlefield State Historic Site on Friday, Sept. 15 at 10:30 a.m. Plan to arrive by 10:15 a.m., to give ample time to park a short distance away from the trailhead. Dress appropriately for the conditions: sturdy shoes and insect repellant are recommended. Light refreshments will be available before the ceremony.
