With subjects as varied as explorer Marco Polo, groundbreaking dancer Martha Graham and early pioneers of flight and rocketry, more than 450 students across North Carolina competed last month through exhibits, documentaries, performances and papers to earn top placements in the state's National History Day competition.

A live webcast from New River State Park at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, will examine the history and culture of the ancient New River in an area inhabited by humans for 10,000 years.

Visitors can experience a taste of life on the brink of the Revolutionary War at the Tryon Palace Living History Weekend from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 4, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 5.

Hanging Rock State Park has opened a new 1,440-square-foot picnic shelter near its swimming lake and bathhouse that's accessible to visitors with disabilities, according to the N.C. Division of Parks and Recreation.

Tryon Palace will offer behind-the-scenes tours at the costume shop and conservation lab Tuesdays in June. All tours begin at 2 p.m. at the Waystation, located on the corner of Pollock and George streets in downtown New Bern.

A West African drumming circle and an interpretation of abolitionist Frederick Douglass are new features to the annual "Days Gone By" program at Somerset Plantation from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 11. 

Celebrate National Lands Day with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences by participating in the 3rd annual Triangle Volksmarch on June 4.

The North Carolina Symphony, led by conductor Albert-George Schram, will perform concerts filled with some of the greatest music from the legendary team of Rodgers and Hammerstein June 1-2 in downtown Raleigh.
